🥙Tips for Making and Folding Tortilla Wraps

Want to make sure your tortilla wraps hold together and don’t fall apart after the first bite? These simple tips will help you build sturdy, mess-free wraps that are easy to roll, eat, and take on the go.

    • Choose the right tortilla. Soft, burrito-size flour tortillas work best. They're flexible, easy to fold, and hold fillings well. Gluten-free or low-carb tortillas can be more delicate and can crack, so warm them slightly before using.
    • Warm it up. A quick 15-30 seconds in the microwave or a few seconds in a warm skillet makes tortillas more pliable and easier to roll without tearing.
    • Don’t overfill. Large tortillas can take 1- 1 ½ cups of filling (you can lean toward the higher end if it's mostly smooshable, soft stuff). Too much filling makes it hard to fold and more likely to burst open. Spread everything evenly and leave space around the edges for folding.
    • Layer it to last. Place moisture-barrier ingredients like lettuce, cheese, or hummus down first to keep juicy items (like tomatoes or saucy chicken) from soaking through. This is especially helpful for make-ahead lunches.
    • Make it crispy. For extra crunch and help sealing the wrap, cook it seam-side down in a hot skillet or panini press for 2–3 minutes until golden and toasty.

🌯 How to Fold a Tortilla Wrap

The classic burrito fold is simple:

flat tortilla with chicken bacon wrap filling in the center.

Step 1: Place 1 - 1 ½ cups of filling at or just below the center of the wrap, leaving a border around the edges.

Step 2: Fold the sides, angling them slightly inward.

Step 3: While holding the sides, bring the bottom edge up over the filling.

hands folding a chicken spinach wrap on a white cutting board.

Step 4: Tuck in the ends with your pinkies while rolling tightly. Optional, place seam-side down on a hot skillet until browned. Or wrap in parchment or aluminum foil and refrigerate until it's time to eat.

    🧊 Make It Ahead

    • Wraps are great for meal prep. Store tightly wrapped in foil, wax paper, or parchment paper in the fridge for 1–2 days. Wraps may be softer the next day, and fresh veggies may lose some of their crispness.
    • For the freshest make-ahead sandwich wraps, prepare the fillings and sauces/dressings and store them in separate containers. Add the dressing and assemble just before eating.
