The BEST Way to Cook Frozen French Fries

If you're looking for a way to make the best frozen French fries without a deep fryer, air fryer fries is the way to go!

Crispy air fryer French fries are golden brown on the outside and perfectly tender on the inside. And they cook in less time than an oven and without all the excess oil of a deep fryer.

But how does the air fryer cooking process work? It really has nothing to do with frying at all.

The secret to creating a crispy hot fresh French fry in about ten minutes is rapid air circulation.

The fan blows the hot air from the heating element inside the basket of the air fryer. And because the fries are elevated on the cooking tray, that hot air circulates all around the fries and cooks them to golden brown deliciousness.

Frozen French fries. About 16 oz. of frozen French fries fits perfectly in the air fryer basket, which is half a bag of Ore-Ida golden fries -- their standard fries. Ore Ida shoestring fries are also great.

Olive oil. A little oil helps the seasoning blend stick to the fries.

Homemade Cajun seasoning. A simple combo of paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper adds the perfect amount of flavor without being too spicy or too salty. You can substitute one tablespoon of your favorite Cajun seasoning.

How to Make Frozen Seasoned Fries in an Air Fryer

Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees.

Stir the Cajun seasoning ingredients together.

Toss the frozen French fries with olive oil in a large bowl. Add the Cajun seasoning and toss until the fries are completely coated in the seasoning mix.

Expert Tips

  • For best results, air fry seasoned frozen French fries in 5-minute increments, shaking the basket in between. This helps to evenly brown all the fries and gives you a chance to check on them for doneness.
  • Customize the seasoning blend to your personal taste. Make it more or less salty or spicy by adjusting the quantities or add your favorite seasonings like chili powder, white pepper, or red pepper flakes.
  • Adjust the cooking time according to the type of fry. Thicker fries take longer to cook than thinner fries.
