❤️You're Going to Love These
- Easy breakfast, snack, dessert, or fruit dip
- Rich, chocolatey flavor and creamy texture -- like chocolate pudding!
- Takes 2 minutes to make with pantry ingredients you might already have -- perfect for a chocolate SOS.
🍫Ingredients
See recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full list of ingredients and exact amounts.
- Plain Greek yogurt. Whole milk Greek yogurt is the best way to get chocolate yogurt with a thick, creamy texture like chocolate mousse. But I also use plain nonfat Greek yogurt -- it's just usually not quite as thick.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder. Natural cocoa powder or dutch-processed cocoa powder will both work. I use Hershey's Special Dark cocoa powder, which is a mix of the two. It has a deep, dark color and rich chocolate flavor.
- Instant espresso powder. A shot of espresso powder enhances the flavor of the chocolate. You can also use twice the amount of instant coffee crystals, or skip it altogether.
- Maple syrup or honey. Maple syrup or honey offsets any bitterness from the cocoa powder and adds just a touch of sweetness without any added sugar. Adjust to taste, you'll need less if you use a sweeter yogurt.
🫐Variations or Substitutions
Yogurt. Use any kind of dairy or dairy-free yogurt. Or try different flavors of creamy Greek yogurt like coconut or vanilla yogurt.
Flavor extracts. Try a splash of vanilla extract, or a flavor like orange, maple, or almond.
Peanut butter. Go for a peanut butter cup vibe with a stir of creamy peanut butter, almond butter, or any nut butter.
Spices. A little cinnamon, ginger, or nutmeg is delicious with chocolate. Or add a kick of cayenne pepper or black pepper! A sprinkle of sea salt is always a great idea.
Toppings-- the best part! Here are some of our favorites:
- Fruit. Fresh fruit, strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries, or banana slices. I also love frozen, slightly thawed berries.
- Chocolate. Dark or milk chocolate chips or shaved chocolate
- Crunchy stuff. Toasted nuts, toasted coconut flakes or coconut chips, granola
- Drizzle. Maple syrup, honey, or melted peanut butter or almond butter
- Flooffy stuff. A dollop of whipped cream or vanilla yogurt
🥣How to Make Chocolate Greek Yogurt
Step 1: In a small bowl, add the cocoa powder, espresso powder, maple syrup, and vanilla extract and give it a quick stir. Add a couple of tablespoons of yogurt and stir into a smooth, creamy chocolatey mixture -- like chocolate sauce.
Step 2: Add the rest of the yogurt and stir until combined. Add your favorite toppings and enjoy. Or cover and chill to enjoy later.
👉Helpful Hint: Stir the cocoa powder and sweetener with a little bit of yogurt until it looks like chocolate sauce -- then stir in the rest of the yogurt. This will ensure a smooth, cohesive mixture without lumps.
✅Top Tips
- Whole-milk Greek yogurt will give your chocolate yogurt the thickest, creamiest texture. Lowfat or nonfat Greek yogurt will also work, but it might not be as creamy. I don't recommend regular yogurt -- it's too thin.
- Stir the cocoa powder and sweetener with a little bit of yogurt until it looks like chocolate sauce -- then stir in the rest of the yogurt. This will ensure a smooth, cohesive mixture without lumps.
- Add sweetener to taste. If you use honey, you might need a little less, as it has a higher level of sweetness.
- Make it even more chocolatey. Not enough chocolate for ya? Try a little more cocoa powder! Sometimes I add up to 3 tablespoons.
🎁Storage
Store your homemade chocolate yogurt in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
❓FAQ
For best results, use Greek yogurt to get a thick, creamy texture similar to chocolate pudding. Full fat will have the creamiest texture, but nonfat or lowfat Greek yogurt will also work.
Yes. Chocolate Greek yogurt is a great meal prep recipe to whip up ahead of time for a week's worth of quick breakfasts and after school snacks.
I prefer my own chocolate yogurt over the store-bought option becasue I can control the sweetness and chocolatey-ness (not a word, but should be). Store-bought yogurt can be shockingly high in sugar and alarmingly low in flavor. Also, I never know when a chocolate craving is going to hit, so I can make this anytime with ingredients I always have on hand anyway.
