With just a couple of ingredients, you can turn a simple bowl of store-bought yogurt into a flavorful, caffeine-infused Coffee Yogurt -- a delicious breakfast, afternoon snack, or base for a coffee smoothie.
Best part, it's easy to make and customize to your tastes. Start with espresso powder or instant coffee crystals, cocoa powder, maple syrup or honey, and plain or vanilla Greek yogurt. The amount of coffee, cocoa, and sweetener you add is entirely up to you and your tastes.
Make a triple batch and meal prep for the busy week ahead!
☕Ingredients
See recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full list of ingredients and exact amounts.
- Instant espresso powder or instant coffee crystals. You can use either one. If you're using instant coffee, you'll need up to twice as much for the same flavor intensity.
- Dark or natural cocoa powder. A little unsweetened cocoa powder enhances the flavor of coffee. Use a lot for a mocha version of coffee yogurt, a little for subtle flavor, or leave it out entirely.
- Greek yogurt. Vanilla or plain Greek yogurt are a good base, but experiment with your favorite flavors of Greek yogurt, like coconut, caramel, or honey vanilla.
- Maple syrup or honey. A little sweetener livens up plain yogurt and offsets bitterness from the coffee and cocoa powder.
🍁Variations or Substitutions
- Flavor extracts. Elevate the coffee and chocolate flavors even further with a splash of maple, almond, caramel, or vanilla extract. Or go for a peppermint mocha vibe with a little peppermint extract -- go easy, start with a drop!
- Spices. Stir in a little cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, ginger, or nutmeg.
🥣How to Make Coffee Yogurt
Step 1: In a small bowl, stir the instant espresso or instant coffee powder, cocoa powder, and maple syrup or honey with a few tablespoons of the yogurt until there are no lumps, and the mixture is perfectly smooth and creamy.
Step 2: Add the rest of the yogurt and stir until well combined. Enjoy topped with toasted coconut, chocolate chips, fresh fruit, or sliced bananas, or blended into a breakfast smoothie. Or cover and refrigerate for later.
👉Helpful Hint: pretty much everything is to taste! Adjust the coffee, cocoa, and sweeteners until it's just perfect for you. We like it extra coffee-ey, chocolatey, and sweet :).
✅Top Tips
- For subtle coffee flavor, start with ½ teaspoon. You can always add more.
- Instant coffee crystals have less intense flavor -- if substituting for instant espresso, use up to double the amount.
- How much sweetener you add depends on how sweet the yogurt is. I like 1 tablespoon in vanilla yogurt and 2 tablespoons in plain yogurt.
- Cocoa powder is optional, but even a teaspoon enhances the rich coffee flavor. I definitely recommend it!
- For the richest flavor and creamiest texture, use full-fat Greek yogurt. Nonfat yogurt has a thinner consistency.
🎁Storage
Store coffee yogurt in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

Notes
- Espresso powder. For subtle coffee flavor, start with ½ teaspoon of espresso powder and add more as needed.
- Instant coffee. If substituting instant coffee crystals, use up to twice the amount.
- Cocoa powder. Cocoa powder is optional but recommended as it enhances the flavor; even 1 teaspoon makes a difference.
- Sweeteners. Sweeten to taste—1 tablespoon for vanilla yogurt, 2 for plain. Honey will be a little harder to stir.
- Yogurt. Full fat Greek yogurt will have the thickest, creamiest texture, but non-fat may also be used. If you use regular yogurt, the texture will be thinner.
