    • Perfect recipe for your special occasion ham
    • Succulent, juicy ham with pineapple brown sugar glaze
    • Great way to free up oven space for holiday meal prep

    Ingredients

    roaster oven ham ingredients.

Bone-in ham. This recipe was prepared with an 8-9 pound smoked, pre-cooked ham. A bone-in half ham or whole ham is less likely to dry out than a spiral ham and more flavorful than boneless ham.

Pineapple juice. Pineapple juice adds sweetness to the glaze and helps counteract the saltiness of the ham. You can also use orange juice.

Brown sugar. Brown sugar adds rich molasses flavor to the ham.

Dijon mustard. Dijon is a perfectly tangy foil against the sweetness of the brown sugar and pineapple juice.

How to Cook a Ham in a Roaster

    1. Prepare the roaster oven.

Pour water into the roaster oven insert pan. Preheat the roaster oven temperature to 325.

    2. Trim and score the ham.

Trim any excess fat from the outer layer down to ¼ inch. Score the ham in a diamond pattern by making diagonal cuts about ⅓ inch deep and 1 inch apart.

    3. Roast the ham.

Wrap the ham in two large sheets of aluminum foil with the opening at the top. Place the ham on the roasting rack in the preheated oven and roast for 1 hour 15 minutes.

    4. Make the brown sugar pineapple glaze.

While the ham is roasting, combine the glaze ingredients in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer for about 5 minutes or until slightly thickened.

    5. Glaze the ham while it roasts.

Brush the ham with ½ of the glaze and wrap it back up in foil. Roast for 1 hour.

Brush the ham with the remaining glaze and keep the foil open. Turn the heat to 425 and roast for 10-15 minutes to bake in the glaze. Cook until it reaches an internal temperature of 140 on an instant-read thermometer.

Remove ham from roaster oven. If desired, brush the top of ham with glaze from the foil. Let the ham rest for 15 minutes before cutting.

    Storage & Freezing

Store leftover ham in an airtight container for 3-4 days.

To freeze, slice ham off the bone and cut it into slices. Portion the ham and wrap each portion in plastic wrap and place it in a freezer bag.

What to Make with Leftover Ham

Leftover ham is a gift that keeps on giving. We love to use it to make:

    • Roasted Asparagus Salad with Warm Ham Vinaigrette
    • English Pea Salad
    • Old Fashioned Ham Salad

    Expert Tips

Heat ham for approximately 18-24 minutes per pound until heated through to 140 degrees f. Use this handy timetable to adjust the cooking time for other types of ham.

Start glazing ham during the last hour of cooking so the glaze doesn't burn.

For a glossy finish, save a little bit of glaze to brush on right before serving.

    FAQs

How long does it take to cook a ham in a roaster?

Cooking time depends on the size of the ham. A good rule of thumb for bone-in ham is to estimate 18-24 minutes per pound of ham. Roast until the ham reaches an internal temperature of 140 degrees. The best way to check for doneness is with a digital read meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the ham.

Can you put a ham in a roaster oven?

Absolutely! A roaster oven is a great option for cooking ham, especially during busy holidays when the oven space is at a premium. I like to wrap the ham in foil and brush it with brown sugar glaze to keep it moist and juicy and full of flavor.

Do you put water in a roaster oven?

Yes. Adding water to the roaster oven helps to prevent the ham from drying out while it cooks. But make sure you add the water to the insert pan, not the roaster. To add water to the roaster, place the insert pan into the roaster oven, then pour water into the bottom of the pan.
