Magic shell is super easy to make and fun to watch it harden right before your eyes. Add even more flavor with your favorite extracts like mint, orange, or hazelnut!

    You’re going to love this

Homemade chocolate magic shell. No need to purchase this anymore! You can make your own homemade version with 2 simple ingredients you might already have: chocolate chips and coconut oil.

Easy recipe. This chocolatey shell recipe comes together in your microwave in about one minute. No double boiler. No candy thermometer.

Fun, fun, fun! Watching the chocolatey sauce hit the cold ice cream, then turn into a crisp shell never gets old. And, of course, tapping on it with your spoon before cracking through the shell is a must. Fun for kids, fun for you.

Elevate your ice cream. If you’re scrambling for a quick dessert that’s fancy enough for guests, you can turn a plain ol' bowl of ice cream into a wow-worthy ice cream sundae.

Make it your own. You can add a few drops of flavored extract to customize your magic shell. Mint, almond, hazelnut, coconut, orange, or vanilla extract would all be amazing. Just start small with a few drops, then add more as needed.

Dip your ice cream cones! If you are used to running to Dairy Queen for a chocolate dipped cone, no need! Now you can make your own at home. You can even dip ice cream bars into your homemade magic shell.

    Ingredients

Chocolate chips. You can use any kind of chocolate. Chips or a chopped chocolate bar will both work. Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, even white chocolate will all be great. Use a good quality chocolate to ensure it melts smoothly. Vegan or allergen-free chocolate chips work well, too.

Coconut oil. Coconut oil is the secret ingredient that transforms melted chocolate into a crunchy shell when it hits the cold ice cream.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Ready for this? It’s so easy.

The only equipment you need is a microwave, a spoon, and a microwave safe bowl or mason jar.

A mason jar is handy because it’s easy to pour from. Also, once it’s cool, you can just pop the lid on and store the leftovers.

    Step 1

Combine chocolate chips and coconut oil in a small bowl or mason jar. If you are adding flavor extracts, add a few drops now — then taste it again when it’s cool to see if you need to add more.

    Step 2

Microwave on high for 30 seconds and stir. Continue heating and stirring in 10 to 20-second intervals until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth.

    Step 3

Let the chocolate mixture cool to room temperature for about 20 minutes.

You can pop it in the refrigerator to speed up this process. But just make sure you don’t cool it until it hardens, or you’ll have to start the melting-in-the-microwave process all over again (she said from experience).

    Step 4

Now the fun part. Pour the chocolate sauce over cold ice cream and wait a few seconds.

You can see the chocolate turn from liquid and glossy to a solid matte shell right before your eyes. Tap, tap, tap with your spoon, then dig in!

How to store leftover chocolate shell

Before storing your leftovers, let it cool completely. Store it in an airtight container or mason jar at room temperature for a couple of weeks.

To use it again, simply reheat it in the microwave until it is pouring consistency.

    Expert Tips

Add your favorite extract to create your own flavored magic chocolate shell.

Use the best quality chocolate you can find to ensure smooth, even melting.

    Recipe FAQs

What is magic shell made of?

I can't tell you... it's magic! Just kidding. Magic shell is made from chocolate and coconut oil melted together.

What is in magic shell that makes it harden?

The secret is in the coconut oil. It melts when warm and hardens when cold.

When melted coconut oil is combined with melted chocolate, it magically turns into a pourable topping that quickly freezes when it hits ice cream into that crunchy, chocolate shell we love so much.
