A Chocolate Shell is a 2-ingredient ice cream topping that instantly elevates any scoop of ice cream and takes just one minute to make in your microwave. Super easy to make and fun to watch the chocolate shell harden right before your eyes!
The only equipment you need is a microwave, a spoon, and a microwave safe bowl or mason jar. A mason jar is handy because it’s easy to pour from. Also, once it’s cool, you can just pop the lid on and store the leftovers.
Combine chocolate chips and coconut oil in a small bowl or mason jar. If you are adding flavor extracts, add a few drops now — then taste it again when it’s cool to see if you need to add more.
Microwave on high for 30 seconds and stir. Continue heating and stirring in 10 to 20-second intervals until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
Let the chocolate mixture cool to room temperature for about 20 minutes. You can pop it in the refrigerator to speed up this process. But just make sure you don’t cool it until it hardens, or you’ll have to start the melting-in-the-microwave process all over again (she said from experience).
Now the fun part. Pour the chocolate sauce over cold ice cream and wait a few seconds. You can see the chocolate turn from liquid and glossy to a solid matte shell right before your eyes. Tap, tap, tap with your spoon, then dig in!
Notes
How to Store Leftover Chocolate ShellBefore storing your leftovers, let it cool completely. Store it in an airtight container or mason jar at room temperature for a couple of weeks. To use it again, simply reheat it in the microwave until it is pouring consistency.
