Did you know you can make grilled cheese sandwiches in the oven? I know, I know ... it's not like making grilled cheese in a skillet is hard, but the oven method is the easiest way to make a whole bunch of sandwiches at once and a great option for when you have other things going on the stovetop -- like a big pot of soup!
I highly recommend using shredded cheese to make grilled cheese sandwiches. Shredded cheese melts quickly and evenly, and if you're lucky, some strays will form a crispy, cheesy crust on the outside of the bread. Dunk it into a cozy bowl of tomato soup, and you've got the ultimate comfort food meal.
🧀Ingredients
See recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full list of ingredients and exact amounts.
- Bread. I like to cut thick ¾"-1" slices of bread from a loaf of Italian or French bread. Other great types of bread for grilled cheese are sourdough, rye, brioche, or regular sandwich bread. But, really, any firm bread that's anywhere from ½" to 1" thick will work great. Just know that the cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of the bread.
- Shredded Cheese. My favorite cheeses are sharp cheddar and smoked Gouda for flavor and Monterey Jack for gooeyness. American cheese is always a classic choice. Other great types of cheese are Colby jack, pepper jack, or Swiss cheese. Freshly shredded cheese makes the best grilled cheese because it melts evenly and oozes out the sides, creating a delicious cheesy crust. You can also use slices of cheese.
🥣How to Make Grilled Cheese in the Oven
Step 1: Slather butter onto all of the bread slices, including the crust, and place 4 of them butter side down in a single layer on a sheet pan. Pile a generous ½ cup of shredded cheese on top of each slice of bread -- or add 2 cheese slices per sandwich.
Step 2: Place the remaining pieces of bread on top, butter side up. Bake in preheated oven at 425 for 5-6 minutes until the bottom is light golden brown. Flip and bake 5-6 more minutes until golden brown and the cheese is melted. Serve warm with a bowl of soup.
👉Helpful Hint: It's time to flip the sandwiches when the bottom starts to turn light golden brown. It will continue to brown after you turn it.
✅Top Tips
- If possible, shred your own cheese. It melts much creamier than pre-shredded cheese.
- The best cheese for a grilled cheese sandwich recipe is a blend of melty and flavorful cheeses.
- Keep a close eye on the bread so it doesn't overly brown and get hard.
❓FAQ
It takes each side of a grilled cheese sandwich 5-6 minutes to bake in the oven, so 10-12 minutes total.
A grilled cheese sandwich is done when the outsides are light golden brown, and the cheese is gooey and melty.
For sure, you should butter the outsides of both pieces of bread. I also like to butter the crust. You can also butter the inside of the bread if you like. You can also use mayonnaise instead of butter -- on the outside and inside.
